Course Description
The main course is divided into six sessions.
The strategy in capital letters is the core tool of each session.
- SESSION 1- Introductions & ABCD's of Low Stress Child Management.
Intros of DWD Basics, the presenters and the students of the current class. Next, we present the first of the ABCD's of Low Stress Child Management. Specific, simple Assignments help participants experience early success with the DWD approach to child management..
- SESSION 2- Get Ready-Get Set; The 3-Choice Quiz; Positive Redirection;
In Session #2, we share reports from assignments of Session #1. We continue with the ABCD's of LowStress Child Management and explain how the brain process 'heat-of-the-moment' corrections. We explore Get-Ready, Get-Set; The 3-Choice Drill and Positive Redirection, the first three of 14 major DWD management tools.
- SESSION 3- The Perfect Choice; QUIET CORRECTION; The Leading Question;
In Session #3, we open with students sharing their experiences of the last week as students apply DWD principles and practices to the management of the children in their care. We, then, continue unpacking some more great DWD tools: The Perfect Choice; QUIET CORRECTION; The Leading Question; Logical & Natural Consequences
QUIET CORRECTION (The Incredible Power of Quiet)
Have you listened to the number of corrections you give your children in a day? Quiet Correction is a way to cut your verbal directives in half...and accomplish more than your extra words ever did
.
… from the mother of a 2-year-old girl and a 4-year-old ADHD boy: I was exhausted after the first day - mentally more than anything, with all the thinking. But my whole demeanor has gotten more quiet than it's ever been. I was not raised that way. My husband and I were both raised with spanking and yelling and screaming to get everything done. I feel so powerful and so in control. We've had many successes. My husband's like, whoa!
- SESSION 4- THE THINK SPACE,
Session #4 is dedicated to The THINK Space, which is both a concept and a tool. As a core concept of DWD, TTS gives adults a gracious way to avoid the emotional traps that children inevitably set for their care providers. As a tool, The THINK Space helps children gracefully resolve the conflicts of their lives without unnecessary adult interference!
- SESSION 5- More O.T.R., Practical Positives, Positive Reinforcement, Mutual Solution Sharing, MAGIC HANDLES.
Session #5 builds on the earlier tools of the DWD approach with The 3-Question Quiz; Role Re-play; "I Understand"; Intentional Ignoring; and an introduction to OFF-TRAUMA RETRACKING (O.T.R.).
OFF-TRAUMA RETRACKING (O.T.R.)
Are you ready for permanent attitude adjustments? Off-Trauma Retracking helps your child prepare an appropriate response before a known issue repeats itself. With your guidance, appropriate behavior becomes something that your child actually wants to do. It's simple, yet amazingly effective
.
…from a mother of two young boys: I have two sons, ages 2 and 5. They take baths at the same time, but the five-year-old is now responsible for washing himself while I take care of the two-year-old. However, the five-year-old has been slow to finish his bath even though he knows that he will be missing reading of books I do for both boys after bath time.
I had hoped that the consequence of missing the stories would be enough to motivate him, but it wasn't working. Then I did an OTR exercise with him. The next night he was the first one finished with his bath, plus he combed his hair and brushed his teeth, all to make sure he would be the first one ready for story time.
- SESSION 6 (optional)- More MUTUAL SOLUTION SHARING, Picking up 'Loose Ends', Question & Answer Forum, Role Play.
This final session of DWD: the basic course expands the OTR approach introduced in Session #5. We, then, use Practical Positives to explain why a consistently positive approach to human management is the safest and most productive approach to life in general and to life with children, in particular. We close with a series of 22 Magic Handles and look at which tools to use in a variety of common, but problematic situations we encounter in the guidance of our children.
